What idea have you shared with your students that actually helped you?
For example, I shared a box breathing technique with my students, and in modeling it for them, I started using it and found it to be a powerful, calming tool.

Similar to yours, Jennifer, I have taught five finger breathing, which adds the sense of touch into a structured breathing, while still keeping it subtle enough that the whole class doesn't know you're doing it. :-)

I have tried very simple grounding techniques, just putting hands, palms down, flat on the desk for a minute. I would like to introduce more simple mindfulness breaks in the classroom.

Amazing. Just before the pandemic, I started using mindfulness in my classes and now I find it is popular, good to know! A breathing technique that I practice is - breathe in for 4 seconds, (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi etc..) breathe out for 6. That's 10 seconds - do this for a minute - which is 6 breaths, with closed eyes. Quite effective. Now, I teach it before exam week. It is hard to get students to trust closing their eyes, but when they do, a new door opens for them. Their anxiety goes down. I did this little differently by myself, but after instructing them, I sometimes use the 1 minute method.
The finger feeling method sounds interesting.
AMATYC has just launched a new Working group - Well-being with Mindfulness for inspired sustainable teachers. The first meeting was on Sep 24th and next one is on Nov 12th, at 4pm EST. You might like to connect with other teachers who are using mindfulness.
