What event, action, or person impacted you early on in your career?
Did this impact change or affect your path?

My first teaching job was at Lompoc High School in Lompoc, CA. The book Mathematics: A Human Endeavor by Harold Jacobs came across my desk. I started using it in my math fundamentals class.  I think I have used his ideas in every class I have taught, and every book I have written, since then.  Three years later I was teaching at Cuesta Community College in San Luis Obispo, CA.  I went to my first math conference. It was in Monterey, CA and I went to a session where Herb Gross was the speaker.  After seeing him speak, I told myself "That's the kind of teacher I want to be."  An interesting side note is that many years later I was the first recipient of the Herb Gross Lifetime Achievement Award at the AMATYC national conference. Events and people have a way circling back to connect with each other, and when they do, it is a very satisfying experience.

Pat, I've never heard of that book - but I'll be looking into it now!

I did not care for arithmetic, not interested at all in math until I arrived in ninth grade and found algebra. Great teacher, way back then actually worked at getting student input to problems and why they took certain steps and listened to the students' thoughts.  That is all it took. :)

Even though my family, who were all educators, helped shaped my life, I credit my Community College English professor for where I am now. When I retired from the military, I was looking at going into teaching in a high school, however she said I was more adept to teaching at the CC level and thus changed my path from getting certified as a HS teacher to majoring in math and computer science in under grad

Chris, how interesting?  What did they say made you a better CC professor?

That is such an interesting question! Things we experience shape our path through work and life in various ways. Looking back, my academic advisor and an inspiring mathematics professor, Dr. Niloufer Mackey, encouraged me to pursue math. I truly enjoyed being in Dr. Mackey's class in Linear Algebra; the lectures were fantastic, as the professor described matrices and operations over them in a vivid, exciting manner, asking us to connect previously learned concepts. We participated in the class, sometimes presented our work on the board, asked questions, and received profound answers. That positive experience influenced me to expand from physics to a math major, which eventually led to graduate studies in mathematics and determined my professional path.
