My first teaching job was at Lompoc High School in Lompoc, CA. The book
Mathematics: A Human Endeavor by Harold Jacobs came across my desk. I started using it in my math fundamentals class. I think I have used his ideas in every class I have taught, and every book I have written, since then. Three years later I was teaching at Cuesta Community College in San Luis Obispo, CA. I went to my first math conference. It was in Monterey, CA and I went to a session where Herb Gross was the speaker. After seeing him speak, I told myself "That's the kind of teacher I want to be." An interesting side note is that many years later I was the first recipient of the Herb Gross Lifetime Achievement Award at the AMATYC national conference. Events and people have a way circling back to connect with each other, and when they do, it is a very satisfying experience.
