I believe, as the IMPACT doc describes in detail, students need to take ownership of the mathematics.. So much of what I see, the students battle with the mathematics. I believe reflecting on their current learning can be very helpful with this. There are 5 bullet points on p. 31 of the IMPACT doc that relates to this.
Of those bullet points, it is important for teachers to use applications that build on students previous knowledge while incorporating new ideas. Doing course work IN CLASS (something I need to do more) is beneficial. It helps students understand that making mistakes is okay and it helps them take ownership and a "belief in diligence and one's own efficacy".

Subject: IMPACT in Action - Habitual Inclination
How can instructors help students develop the habitual inclination to see mathematics as sensible, useful, and worthwhile, coupled with a belief in diligence and one's own efficacy?
