It has been said by more than one calculus I instructor that the best course in preparation for calculus I is calculus I (due to the fact that so many students develop the necessary precalculus algebra skills on their first attempt at calculus I).
To what degree do mastery of prerequisites feed into the ability of a student to become proficient in upper level college mathematics courses?
Is it possible to offer retakes of tests in high level math courses to accommodate the growth mindset?
Are there other alternatives to demonstrating proficiency (such as cumulative exams along the way)?------------------------------
