IMPACT states that "The students who are most engaged are the ones who think they matter to the teacher." ~Dr. Russell Quaglia (2016, p. 6)

How do you show your students that they matter to you?

Before the class begins, I post an introduction of myself on the Class Cafe and ask that they do the same.  I share my pronouns and talk about my family. I ask them what name they would like me and their classmates to use when addressing  them.  I  I ask them if they have any concerns.  I respond to their posting withikn 24 hours so that they know that I am available to answer any and all questions.

Nancy, I totally agree that engaging them on day one is VERY important. I know that we had a webinar on the first day of class - I forgot what the date of the webinar was - that expanded on the ideas you shared too! I wonder how faculty get to know their students beyond the classroom. For instance, I worked with a colleague who taught me about Community Walks, where I as a faculty member purposefully went out to my students' neighborhood and spent some time getting to know them by getting to know their community. She also challenged me to attend sporting events, plays, and other student extra curricular activities to show them that they matter beyond the classroom as well. I am sad to say that much of this was lost in the pandemic, but I hope to return to it when (please be soon) this pandemic provides the opportunity to return to in-person activities.

    AJ,
That is a great idea!  Most of my Terra students live in Fremont which is a small town.  I attend Terra events such as the student concerts and some sporting events along with such things as PTK induuctions and nursing pinnings.  Graduation is one of my favorite times of being a teacher. I love being able to congratulate my students and shake their hands or give them a hug when they earn their associate degree.  I agree much was lost during the pandemic but thinks are opening up!

I've started setting up "Meet the Prof" meetings with each student before the class starts. They're just 10 minutes long, but it really goes a long way to engaging students. Plus, they let me know what their major and future career plans are, and I let them know of opportunities I think they might be interested in. I've also found out about a lot of special circumstances that students have that help me better meet their needs later on. It's kind of fun just chatting with students about their interests!

That's great to provide one-on-one introductions in this way. I once found out during an orientation session where I was sharing about our corequisite offerings that students have never met a professor before they met me during this session. I realized that just seeing that professors are not intimidating, but are people who are invested in supporting them (and dare I say, just people too) made a huge difference in their incoming experience. I highly recommend finding ways to see students beyond classrooms, and this idea of just before is really a nice easy way to make the timing simple!
