There have been calls to action for instructors to not only be aware of student thinking when teaching, but to leverage student thinking to guide instruction. So, what does it mean to use student thinking when teaching? And in what ways can student thinking guide instruction?

Sara VanderWarf, a K12 math instruction blogger, has a habit of asking herself whether she can get her students to see it before she shows them and to say it before she tells them. (She also has some great tools for making that happen.) Granted, she works in classrooms where they have all school year to cover what we do in a couple handfuls of weeks. However, I do find that it's useful to institute this philosophy where I can and to adopt and adapt her and other inquiry-based tools to make it happen in my classroom.

Thank you for the correction. I should have looked up the spelling. I apologize for not doing my due diligence.

Great prompt, April! We liked thinking about this topic so much we wrote a whole book about it! Each chapter is focused on a different course (or major topic, in the case of Calculus.) We present lots of examples of student thinking, most drawn directly from the research literature. That's followed by a "What You Can Do" section, which presents research-based instructional strategies for overcoming the common teaching pitfalls.

That sounds great, thanks! I'm not a MAA member but will check with colleagues.
Student thinking is a wonderful way to guide instruction. I use it in some classes, and rather than telling them, I ask them how they would solve a problem. It takes more time, however.
