Dear Kate and IMPACT community colleagues,
Students ready to act quickly can get involved with an REU program. These have been around for decades, and they come in many flavors. Some deadlines may have already passed for this summer.
Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer Programs
The Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) programs support active research participation by undergraduate students. REU projects involve students in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. Applicants should note that most application deadlines fall in February–March.

Here is a link to Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) undergraduate student opportunities: https://education.ornl.gov/undergraduate.
It includes internships for STEM undergraduates at many locations. Of particular interest are the DOE's CCI (Community College Internships) and SULI (Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships) programs.

I have a student who just wrote to me to ask if I know of any internships for someone majoring in mathematics. I don't know if he only wants an internship in Flagstaff, or if he is willing to go somewhere else. Does anyone have any ideas of where he can look for internships? He is in his third year of his bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University.
Thanks,
