Teaching Co-requisite Courses: Two Years Later and Lessons Learned

In this session, a corequisite model for Quantitative Reasoning and Statistics will be examined with ideas presented for ongoing improvement. Active learning techniques including group work and lab assignments incorporating a scaffold approach will be presented. Discuss ideas for creating a community of scholars in your corequisite classroom!

Sharon North is a Professor of Mathematics at St. Louis Community College. She teaches gateway mathematics including Pre-calculus, Quantitative Reasoning, Introductory Statistics, College Algebra and Calculus. Sharon has also worked to develop and implement co-requisite offerings to these transfer level courses. Sharon designs math curricula and writes active learning content for students and is a Senior Contributing Author of the OpenStax Corequisite to College Algebra text . She has also served in leadership roles as a mathematics department chair and as district developmental education coordinator. Sharon served as the STLCC faculty representative to the Missouri Co-requisite at Scale Taskforce and serves on the state advisory board for mathematics pathways.
