I'm writing to let you know about something going on with the SUMMIT-P project (Synergistic Undergraduate Mathematics via Multi-institutional Interdisciplinary Teaching Partnerships). They are organizing a fall-semester learning community through the MAA OPEN Math program, with registration deadline = July 10). In my mind, first year courses provide a great framework to start conversations with your non-math colleagues, and those conversations/relationships (dare I say, partnerships?) can pay off down the road in many many ways beyond that one course that started the conversation. (Yes, there is a small registration fee per team, but that's just so we know that the people who sign up will show up.) If this resonates with an initiative you are working on (or would like to start), then this Learning Community might be just what you need for support and encouragement to get it done. Here's the complete description from OPEN Math - Building Curriculum-Focused Interdisciplinary Faculty Partnerships
Description: Introductory mathematics primarily serves students in partner disciplines as a prerequisite for their major's content courses. This Learning Community will walk teams of interdisciplinary faculty through the establishment of a robust, local partnership to develop, deliver, and maintain course content that is relevant for the students in partnering departments. The ideal workshop participants would be 1-3 math faculty who teach and/or coordinate a lower level mathematics course that serves as a prerequisite or corequisite for one or more partner disciplines (Business, Sciences, Engineering, Health, etc.) along with one or more partner discipline faculty.
Schedule:
- August 12 | 1:00 - 5:00 PM ET - Workshop for mathematics teams to discuss initial considerations for setting goals, establishing target course work and discipline partners, and other preliminary considerations.
- September 19 | 3:00 - 5:00 PM ET - Partner discipline faculty will be expected to attend the online meeting in September and participate in the work throughout the semester.
- October 24, November 21, & December 12 | 3:00 - 5:00 PM ET - A subset of the team will be expected to attend the monthly meetings throughout the fall semester.
Spring - The workshop instructors will be available throughout the spring for consultation. A final conference/share out of work will take place in May
