I hope the fall term is going well for you! Thank you for continuing to support BSME and letting more students know about this unique study abroad experience in mathematics education.
What is new with BSME?
Summer@BSME 2024 cohort had a highly successful summer. The group included participants from colleges/universities from across the US, as well as several recent graduates and in-service teachers. They were a tight group who learned a lot and had fun together. Check out the student comments and videos on our website.
BSME is now offering graduate credits! Participants who hold a bachelor's degree by the time they enter BSME will earn a total of 8 graduate credit hours through Texas State University. Undergraduate students will continue to earn undergraduate credit from St. Olaf College. See our website for more information about how credits transfer.
About BSME
Summer@BSME is our 6-week summer program and has two academic components:
courses in mathematics education and
field experience at a mathematics camp for secondary students.
Participants learn about the Hungarian pedagogy in their course work; in the field experience, they explore how the methods learned in the courses are put into practice.
If you have any students, including current seniors, who would be a good fit for the program, please encourage them to apply. This also includes students who are thinking about teaching but aren't necessarily completing a teacher certification program. Please also share this opportunity with recent grads and in-service teachers, and remind them about the graduate credits! We are currently accepting applications for the Summer 2025 term. Admission is rolling, with applications due March 15.
Further below is text that can easily be forwarded by email to your students. More information about BSME, including our online application, can be found at bsmeducation.com. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thank you so much for continuing to share about BSME with your students. Your support has been instrumental in letting more students know about this unique study abroad opportunity.
Best wishes,

Dear Students,
Are you passionate about the learning and teaching of mathematics? Would you like to spend a summer in a beautiful historical city, with one of the most vibrant cultures in Europe? How about learning in small classes where instructors challenge each student to deeply engage with the material?
Please consider Summer@BSME, a 6-week summer program in Budapest, Hungary, designed for those interested in the learning and teaching of secondary mathematics. Participants explore the Hungarian pedagogy, in which a strong and explicit emphasis is placed on problem solving, mathematical creativity, and communication. Participants can earn either undergraduate or graduate credits.
Why Summer@BSME? Today's teachers are expected to provide students with opportunities to struggle productively towards understanding, and the Hungarian pedagogy has the potential to play a critical role in this endeavor. At Summer@BSME, we are excited for our participants to develop and bring back this new perspective on mathematics education.
We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2025 (due March 15). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply early! More information, including the online application and program costs, can be found at bsmeducation.com.
