I have been using forums to generate critical thinking about the topics taught. I am glad to state that it has worked.
The students are required to post a handwritten solution for one exercise and grade one of their classmates' solution as follows:

Neatly handwrite the step-by-step solution for one of these exercises Forum_3_Exercises.pdf

Click on Add New Thread and post it here.

Do Not explain your reasoning when writing the steps, and leave some room for your classmate's notes when they grade it.

Your solution should provide the final answer to the questions.

While grading the solution posted by one of your classmates, make sure you

• Justify every step taken by stating any differentiation rule/formula used.
• State also if any other rule/formula is used to simplify the function.
• Identify mistakes, if any, and give any correction needed.

You may not post solution and grade the same exercise.

In our class Mistakes are Expected, Respected, Inspected and Corrected!

I really love the last line about mistakes being expected, respected, inspected and corrected! I'm going to start using that too, if you don't mind.

I do something similar and tell my students to justify each line with the rule, theorem, etc used. They are to write their explanation geared to the student in the class who is struggling the most with the concept, and NOT to write for the professor. This really seems to help them show all the steps.

I've also seen a great reduction in careless mistakes on exams and can see that students are incorporating this style into their exams. It definitely works!

I don't mind at all. It is not my line, I heard it somewhere.

And I like the idea of having the students explain to someone that is struggling with understanding. I sometimes play the struggling student myself.
